Why travel to wine country when the Boedeckers are in town?

The cute-and-brainy husband-and-wife team of Stewart Boedecker and Athena Pappas make wine together in an urban facility shared with Grochau Cellars. Stewart's style is more subtle, herbaceous and restrained; Athena's style is more lush and fruit-forward. So between their signature "Stewart" and "Athena" pinot noir bottlings ($34), there's something to please everyone. This forward-thinking couple has embraced screwcaps, sells their wines by the cask to Oregon and California restaurants, and runs a bottle-refill program in partnership with a CSA. What's not to love?
  • Splurge: 2009 Shea Vineyard Yamhill-Carlton Pinot Noir ($65)
  • Steal: 2010 "Pappas Wine Co." Willamette Valley Pinot Blanc ($15)
  • Fab Find: 2010 "Reflection" Willamette Valley Rosé of Pinot Noir ($15)
  • Annual Production: 4,500 cases
  • Wine Geek Notes: Small-lot fermentations; 18+ months of (mostly neutral) barrel age; indigenous yeast; no additives.
  • Estate Info: Fave Willamette Valley vineyard sources include LIVE-certified Shea, Stoller and Cherry Grove.
  • Vineyard Geek Notes: Chickens, turkeys, pigs and produce grow at Cherry Grove Vineyard, just outside of Gaston. The ripe pinot from this site ($50) is a fave of the critics.
